and FA Cup competitions were suspended at the end of the 1914/15 season
due to World War I.
The Football League was replaced with regional leagues - and for the next 4 seasons Everton played in Lancashire Section Principal and Subsidiary Tournaments. In 1918/19 they finished first in the Lancashire Section Principal Tournament and played Nott'm Forest (winners of the Midlands Section Principal Tournament) in a two-legged League Championship Play-Off tie. The FA Cup was not replaced and no national Cup competitions were contested. The appearance and goal statistics below are not counted in any official records. † Teams were allowed to use guest players in wartime matches. The actual clubs that Everton's guest players belonged to is indicated where appropriate. Players in bold only played wartime games for Everton; they never played in a normal Football League or FA Cup match for the club.
* Ernie Gault played for Everton in 1912/13 and again in 1919/20. During the war he played for the club as a guest in 1916/17 before signing permanently at the end of that season. ** Joe Donnachie played for Everton from 1905/06 - 1908/09 and again in 1919/20. During the war he played for the club as a guest. *** Jimmy Miller played 18 Principal Tournament matches as a guest in 1918/19, scoring 6 goals, before signing permanently for Everton at the end of January 1919, after which he played a further 10 War games for the club in total scoring 1 more goal. **** Bert Rigsby guested for Everton during the war and afterwards signed for the club in May 1919. |
