The normal Football League and FA Cup had been suspended when World War II broke out.
The Football League was replaced with regional leagues - and in 1941/42 Everton played in the Northern Division,
which ended on December 25 1941, with 38 teams competing but only playing 18 games each (9 at home and 9 away).
After that date the 51 teams from the Northern and Southern Divisions combined for a 10-game
League War Cup qualifying competition.
Each club played 5 others, home and away, with the opponents being selected by the Football League.
The 32 teams with the best records qualified for the knock-out stages.
All of the games played in the Cup qualifying competition and the knock-out rounds, together with other
non-War Cup fixtures, counted towards the War Football League Championship, which comprised all 51 teams
who had competed in the pre-Xmas Northern and Southern Divisions.
Clubs did not all play the same number of games and positions were decided on the average points
per game multiplied by 23, with only those teams playing 18 or more games being included in the final table.
In 1941/42 London clubs played in their own separate London League and London War Cup competitions.
Match, appearance and goal statistics are not counted in any official records.
