introduced into football for the 1891-92 season but it obviously took
players a while
to get used to them as the first 4 in Everton games were all missed! Sunderland's Hughie Wilson was the first - he saw his 2nd minute penalty on Christmas Day 1891 saved by goalkeeper Richard Williams at our then home, Anfield. Everton's first penalty - also at Anfield - was taken by Alex Latta on March 5th 1892 - and was saved by Stoke's Ike Brookes. Everton's Fred Geary was the next to step up. He put a penalty wide at Bolton in October 1892 and then hit the post against Burnley at our new Goodison Park home in December 1892. Finally, on February 18th 1893 in the 78th minute of an FA Cup Quarter-Final against Sheffield Wednesday at Goodison, Everton full-back Bob Kelso became the first person to successfully convert a penalty in an Everton game. In all there have been 1,211 penalties (not including penalty shoot-outs) in competitive Everton games, 672 for us and 539 for our opponents. We've scored 473 and missed 199; they've scored 363 and missed 176. 133 different Everton players have taken on a spot-kick and 56 of our goalkeepers have faced one - including stand-in 'keeper, Sandy Brown, in October 1967! 3 penalties have been awarded in Everton games on 9 occasions - and on Christmas Day 1931 away at Blackburn there were 4! Everton have been awarded 3 penalties once - at home to Sheffield Wednesday in March 1905. It's happened to our opponents once too - at Man City in December 1957, when Ken Barnes became the only player to convert 3 penalties in a single Everton game. Gathered together here are details of all of the penalties in Everton matches, separated out into handy sections so you can see who have been the best and the worst takers, the most successful goalkeepers, and so on!
