Hat-Tricks
In Everton Matches
(Click for: Hat-Tricks For Everton Hat-Tricks Against Everton) There have been 322
hat-tricks in competitive Everton games, 322 if you include as two Jack
Southworth's
6 goals against West Brom in December 1893. Everton have notched 202 (or 203) of them and our opponents have managed 120. Bolton's Kenny Davenport scored the first hat-trick in a game involving Everton, way back in September 1888. A month later Archibald McKinnon scored Everton's first - at our then home Anfield - against Derby County. The first at Goodison Park came in December 1893 courtesy of Everton's Jack Southworth against Sheff Wed. Jack Southworth's 6 goal haul against West Brom (mentioned above) is the only time someone has scored 6 in a game involving Everton. Two opponents have managed 5 goals - Derek Kevan for West Brom at The Hawthorns in March 1960 and Tommy Johnson (a future Everton player!) for Man City at Goodison in September 1928. Three Everton players have scored 5 goals in a game - Bob Latchford against Wimbledon in the League Cup in August 1978, Tommy Eglington against Doncaster in a September 1952 Division 2 game (both at Goodison Park) and the incomparable Dixie Dean managed it 3 times - against Man Utd in October 1927, against Sheff Wed in October 1931 and against Chelsea in November 1931, all three at Goodison Park. No opposition player has scored more than 2 hat-tricks against Everton - but nine have managed it twice: Jimmy Brain, George Brown, David Herd, George Hilsdon, Tom Holford, George Holley, Jim Melrose, Ian Rush and Irvine Thornley. Both Brown and Melrose did it for two different clubs - Huddersfield and Aston Villa for Brown and Coventry and Charlton in the case of Melrose. 4 players have scored hat-tricks in Everton games and still ended up on the losing side! Two of them were Everton players and two were opponents. For Everton, John Bell did it at Aston Villa in September 1895 and Jimmy Harris, famously, in our record 10-4 defeat at Tottenham in October 1958. Against Everton, Middlesbrough's Billy Birrell hit a hat-trick and lost in February 1923, whilst Irvine Thornley did the same in September 1908 for Man City - both matches being at Goodison Park. Gathered together behind the links above are details of all of the hat-tricks in Everton games, separated out into different sections so you can see who managed them for us and who got them for our opponents, as well as seeing who were the youngest scorers and who were the oldest. |
