It used to be called
the "friendly derby" but in recent years it has been anything but
friendly - on the pitch at least.
The initial 88 years of the Merseyside Derby saw just 5 sendings-off,
with the first dismissal being that of Everton's Alf Milward back
in 1896 (and not, as many people believe, Gary Stanley and Terry
McDermott in 1979).
Since the arrival of the Premier League, however, there have been
an additional 25 red cards brandished - 17 to the Blues and 8 to
the Reds - plus the early FA Cup departure of Liverpool's Lucas
in the marvellous 2009 Dan Gosling derby. Liverpool boss Arne
Slot and his assistant manager also each received a red card
after the final whistle in the last ever Goodison Park derby
in February 2025!
Not including managers and assistants, there have been 31 sendings-off in total and the full list is below.
