Howard Kendall

When he joined Everton in March 1967, Howard Kendall had already made history with Preston as the youngest player then to appear in an FA Cup Final.

He was the final piece of the jigsaw that made up the "Holy Trinity" midfield of Ball-Harvey-Kendall and in contrast to the graceful Harvey and the fiery goalscoring Ball, Kendall was the aggressive workhorse in the midfield trio.

He was never capped by England - one of football's biggest mysteries - but in 277 appearances for Everton he appeared in a losing FA Cup final in 1968 and received a League winner's medal in 1969/70.

He left Everton for Birmingham in March 1974 as part of the deal that brought Bob Latchford to Goodison Park but he was back, in May 1981 - even playing six first-team games in 1981/82 - to take Everton to unimagined heights in his first of three spells as manager of the club.
