Colin Harvey

Colin Harvey was an unknown eighteen year-old in September 1963 when he made his Everton debut in the cauldron that was the San Siro against Inter Milan in the European Cup.

The midfielder performed well and the following season he became a regular and a mainstay of Harry Catterick's successful side of the sixties. By early 1967 Harvey had been joined at the club by Alan Ball and Howard Kendall and the famous "Holy Trinity" was born.

Harvey had two talents above all - his workrate, which was prodigious and meant he could turn up practically anywhere on the pitch at any given moment, and his passing ability, particularly incisive defence-splitting passes.

He was a cool, classy player, elegant to watch and earned himself the nickname the "White Pele".
Unforgivably he won only one England cap - against Malta in 1971 - but he was in the 1966 FA Cup winning side, as well as the beaten side in 1968, and he won a League title winner's medal in 1969/70.

In all he made 388 appearances for Everton - his latter seasons at the club disrupted heavily by injury - and he moved on to Sheffield Wednesday in September 1974.

He was to return to Goodison in 1976 and worked his way through the coaching hierarchy to become Everton manager in June 1987.
