Appearances and Goals

<< 1941-42                   (Click for:    Final League Tables and Cup Winners      back to Everton's Results)                    1943-44 >>

The normal Football League and FA Cup had been suspended when World War II broke out.
The Football League was replaced with regional leagues - and in 1942/43 Everton played in the Northern Division,
which ended on December 25 1942, with 48 teams competing but only playing 18 games each (9 at home and 9 away).
After that date the 54 teams from the Northern and Western Divisions combined for a 10-game
League War North Cup qualifying competition.
Each club played 5 others, home and away, with the opponents being selected by the Football League.
The 32 teams with the best records qualified for the knock-out stages.
All of the games played in the Cup qualifying competition and the knock-out rounds, together with other
non-War Cup fixtures, counted towards the War Football League Northern Division 2nd Championship,
which comprised all 54 teams who had competed in the pre-Xmas Northern and Western Divisions,
although clubs did not all play the same number of games.
In 1942/43 London and Southern clubs played in the War Football League Southern Division and
in their own Football League War South Cup.
Match, appearance and goal statistics are not counted in any official records.

* All of the Football League War North Cup games also counted towards the War Football League Northern Division 2nd Championship.
Games played and goals scored in these 'dual matches' have only been included once in the players' overall totals.

† Teams were allowed to use guest players in wartime matches.
The actual clubs that Everton's guest players belonged to is indicated where appropriate.

‡ Jimmy McIntosh played for the club as a guest during the war and later signed permanently in March 1949.

Players in bold only played wartime games for Everton; they never played in a normal Football League
or FA Cup match for the club.
